Getting Started as a Coach

A step-by-step guide for new coaches.

Step 1: Register as a Volunteer

Register through InLeague and indicate your interest in coaching. Select your preferred age division.

Register as a volunteer on InLeague

Step 2: Contact Your Division Coach Administrator

Let your Division Coach Administrator know you’re interested in coaching. They’ll help place you with a team and answer division-specific questions.

Step 3: Complete Required Training

All coaches must complete these requirements before the season:

Background Check

Complete through InLeague.

Livescan Fingerprinting

Required once (unless you move to a new region). See Training Classes for locations.

Online Safety Courses

Complete through AYSOU/eTrainU:

  • SafeSport training
  • AYSO Safe Haven
  • CDC Concussion Awareness
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest awareness

Age-Specific Coach Certification

Attend an in-person class or complete online certification for your specific division.

Division meetings are held in August before the season starts. You’ll receive:

  • Equipment bag
  • Team roster
  • Practice field assignment
  • Important information for the season

Step 5: Contact Your Team

Once you have your roster, reach out to parents to:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Confirm practice day and time
  • Schedule the team meeting
  • Answer initial questions

Step 6: Plan Your First Practice

Practices begin the day after Labor Day. Use your coaching manual to plan age-appropriate activities.
