Refereeing in Region 13
AYSO depends on parent volunteers to referee games. Without referees, games cannot be played.
Why Referee
Referees make youth soccer possible. As a referee, you:
- Keep games safe and fair for all players
- Learn the rules of soccer in depth
- Stay physically active
- Connect with your community
- Watch your child and their teammates grow as players
What You Need to Get Started
All referees must complete:
- Referee training course (8U Official or Regional Referee)
- LiveScan fingerprinting (one-time requirement)
- Background check (annual, free)
- Safety courses (SafeSport, Safe Haven, Concussion Awareness, Sudden Cardiac Arrest)
See Referee Training for details on each requirement.
Certification Levels
AYSO has five referee certification levels:
| Level | Minimum Age | Games Covered |
|---|---|---|
| 8U Official | 10 | 6U, 7U, 8U |
| Regional Referee | 12 | Up to 12U (assistant through 14U) |
| Intermediate | 14 | Through 14U (assistant in 16U) |
| Advanced | 16 | Through 16U (assistant in 19U) |
| National | 18 | All levels |
Most parent referees start as 8U Officials or Regional Referees, depending on their child’s division.
Game Scheduling
Referees sign up for games through InLeague each week. The process varies by division:
- 6U-8U: Referees work their own child’s games
- 10U-12U: Teams provide assistant referees and share center referee duties
- 14U: Region assigns center referees; teams provide assistants
- 16U-19U: Area 1C assigns referees through CGI-Sports
See Referee Scheduling for the full process.
Youth Referees (PRO Program)
Players ages 10 and older can become certified referees through the PRO (Player Referee Organization) program. Youth referees work games for younger divisions and gain valuable experience. See PRO Program for details.
